The family of these cute, charming and sometimes cheeky animals is very, very extensive. Different types of raccoon family in the world Due to their omnivorousness and ability to adapt quickly to almost any climatic conditions, raccoons have been successfully introduced on all continents of our planet and turned into many independent subspecies.
So here's how many species of raccoons there are (main branches):
- Raccoon-crawlers
- Raccoon raccoons
- Cosumel raccoons.
The last species of raccoon is the smallest. These animals live only in Mexico. They have very fluffy fur and a luxurious striped tail. The Cosumel raccoon lives a reclusive life, this animal is not domesticated, although all raccoon species are capable of living close to humans.
Raccoon Family in the World
The crustacean inhabits vast areas of South, Central, and North America. This raccoon species is nicknamed for its taste for crustaceans. They love crabs, lobsters, and shellfish of all kinds. Raccoon crustaceans are often domesticated. They are used to hunt small rodents and other agricultural pests.
The raccoon striped raccoon is the most numerous raccoon species. The striped raccoon can be found in both Americas, Europe, Asia, Africa, and even Australia. This animal is called the American raccoon, because originally, this predator lived only in North America, whence in the early XX century was artificially introduced into the USSR and then in many European countries. In Germany, raccoons were bred with the blessing of Goering (an important figure of the Third Reich).
Raccoons are wonderfully domesticated. This subspecies of raccoon is prized for its predilections for eating rodents and reptiles. Striped raccoons are good at clearing out venomous snakes and dangerous reptiles.
That's how many species of raccoons are found in the wild.
Position of raccoons in the hierarchy of mammalian predators
Raccoons are a very ancient predator species. The very first traces of raccoons are found in the territory of modern Europe, from where this animal came to North America when Eurasia and America were still one continent (before the splitting of the lithospheric plates). Those raccoons that remained in Europe were successfully eliminated by the wyverns. And the North American family has survived to this day practically unchanged.
Raccoons are something in between martens and bears. All three species share the same genetic code. Also, the raccoon species are close to the olingo, the kinkajou and the rhinoceros.
In the past, when studying raccoon species, the list of animals with striped coloration was extended to include koalas. But as modern studies of the genetic code have shown, koalas are a separate animal species.
The closest relatives of the raccoon are the cacomitzli. These animals have a body structure similar to that of raccoons and a striped tail. The cacomitzli is known as the "half-puma". In part, this animal resembles a cat, only with a long, striped tail. Half-pumas live a nocturnal life and are a real menace to small rodents. Many large farms deliberately lure this animal close to their land to destroy the population of small rodents.
